Days like yesterday are the reason I moved to North Carolina. Nearing mid-December, and temps were in the mid-60s with nary a cloud in the sky.
Dave’s Ride started in Oak Ridge, rolled out past a group of Oak Ridge Military Academy cadets who shouted for us to donate our bikes to Toys for Tots, then turned north toward Belew’s Creek.
The early miles of this route are flat to rolling, but the midpoint is marked by a 3/4 mile climb over the dam at Belew’s Creek. It’s not the steepest climb, nor obviously the longest — but it’s a tough one no matter how good your conditioning is.
My legs are coming back after my unscheduled layoff, and I wasn’t the fastest to the top of the climb, but I wasn’t the slowest either. We stopped for a moment at the hilltop store to get something to drink, then rolled back home at a slightly faster pace.
Mileage for the day: 39.1.
