Bored with your conventional bicycles? Try on a penny farthing (aka highwheeler) for size. If you really like it you can build your own.
Full disclosure: I’ve ridden a highwheeler. Lots. It’s easier than you’d expect and every ride is an adventure in the best sense. I have great memories of riding a highwheeler through a Holland, MI neighborhood during a Victorian Days festival. Afterward, I rode back to the shop that owned it, taking a route that passed through the heart of downtown. I loved the look on one driver’s face when I rolled up next to him at a stop light and peered down at him through his sunroof. My only mistake during that ride was the attempted trackstand at the end. Highwheelers are not built for trackstands and it’s a long way to the ground, but live and learn, right?
