Work took me to California for a few days, and I spent some of my free time wandering in Old Sacramento, which I described to Jill as “just like Old Scottsdale, minus the charm.” Old Sac sells the history, but people seem to go for the party. Groups of bachelorettes roving past building facades straight out of the 1800s creates a weird disconnect.

The good:
If you’re into railroad history, this is your place.
The Parliament Wine Lounge is a great place to sit a while and enjoy a flight.
In Velo Veritas is happily dangerous to any cyclist’s wallet. Great shop, and I had an equally great conversation with the owner/sole employee.
The Firehouse had delicious and creative steak tartare. I took the advice of the staff at Parliament Wine Lounge and sat at the bar.
Not Old Sacramento, but worth a mention: I went to Yard House at DoCo for a beer, and went back two more times for the food. Everything I ate there — especially the Szechuan Beef Noodles — was delicious. Whoever is helming the kitchen is quite capable.
