Jill and I spent last weekend in the Berkshires. Specifically, around Lee, Lenox, Stockbridge, and Becket. We need to go back, though we’ll have to time a visit so we can catch the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood again.

Anywhere in the vicinity of Tanglewood, it’s hard to miss the red roses, pins worn by supporters of Andris Nelson, the BSO’s soon-to-be ex musical director. Many, but not all, of the BSO musicians wore them during Sunday’s performance of Ode to Joy. They’re a visible reminder that a significant set of BSO patrons are pissed the about the BSO board’s decision not to renew Nelson’s contract. You can get a flavor of the conflict here.

We attended the performance of Ode to Joy. It was transcendent. Why have we waited so long to see the BSO? And before that, we saw the Moanin’ Frogs at Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood. I’d never heard of the Moanin’ Frogs before Jill asked if I wanted to go. Now I’m a fan. They’re best experienced live, so go.
Saturday lunch was ice cream at High Lawn Farm. Standing in a long line is part of the experience. So is petting the cows.

Saturday night we trekked out to Becket to eat at the Dream Away Lodge. My barber recommended it, and I owe him a giant thank you. It’s a rambling old place where you can imagine Bob Dylan and Joan Baez showing up to play a few songs. They did, in ’75, along with the Rolling Thunder Revue. The Lodge plays a role in Dylan’s Renaldo and Clara. Find the entire four hours online, or save yourself the pain and watch a clip.

Dylan’s long gone from the Lodge, but the place carries on with some excellent food and frequent performances in the living room. Dinner was terrific. The swordfish and tomatillo cream sauce were memorable. We’ll go back.
