I’m curious about the things fellow travelers find indispensable. I spend a lot of time on the road, and on planes and in airports, and have my list. Although I’m sure it will keep evolving, these are the most important bits:
eReader: I understand the love for the Onyx Boox Palma 2. It’s a delight — a supercharged reading device with the form factor of a smartphone and a configurable eInk screen. It has a native ebook app, and I’ve installed the Kindle and Kobo apps, as well as Reader and The NY Times.
Yes, you can surf the web and listen to music and ebooks with the Palma, but I don’t do that. It’s strictly for reading.
Camera: Phone cameras have their limits, so my Ricoh GRIII travels with me everywhere. I wrote a couple of articles explaining why I love it so much.
Headphones: I resisted the Apple AirPods Pro hype for too long. That was a mistake. Mine go with me on every trip, because I like to settle into my seat on a plane, block out noise and listen to music or podcasts, and signal to people around me that, no, I don’t want to talk. If I plan to be in the air for more than six hours, I’ll also carry my Bose Qc20 wired earbuds, so I can plug in and watch a movie.
Power Bank: No explanation needed. If I’m wearing my Apple Watch, I’ll carry a VRURC power bank that incorporates a watch charger. If not, a smaller Anker MagSafe charger goes with me.
Watch: If you are a watch-wearing sort of person, checking the time on your phone just won’t do. I am this person. I have two travel watches in rotation: The first is an Apple Watch Series 10. This is my go-to when I want a lot of functions on my wrist: Time, weather, altitude, mileage tracking, blood glucose, etc. Think, a trip somewhere to bicycle or hike. Then there are times I prefer a GADA (Go Anywhere, Do Anything) watch. I’ll wear my Bulova Oceanographer GMT. Aside from having a cool nickname (the Devil Diver, because it’s waterproof to 666 feet), it displays a second time zone, looks good like only a dive watch can, and is easily readable in all conditions, above or below the water’s surface. I picked one up from a dealer on eBay the beginning of summer, and have thrashed it all across the country since.
Bonus: A merino wool Buff is a hat, headband, eye cover, neck gaiter, and padded camera case. Nothing else weighs so little and does so much.
